Antique sterling silver articulated stilton cheese scoop by Moses Brent 1801
Rare and infrequently seen articulated cheese scoop, beautifully made with a sterling silver handle bordered decoration with a single animal crest engraving, unknown association. The stilton or cheese scoop is sterling silver with the articulation part made from steel. Steel was and is used in part as sterling silver is too soft for working parts, as such the mechanism would ware very quickly. The mechanism separates and opens as one for cleaning via a turn button on the spade end. The handle is assayed with the date letter (I) for 1801 along with the makers mark. The scoop end is marked with the date letter (F) for 1804. Handles of this type where made up in several numbers and set aside for varying uses, the scoop has been made slightly later and then added to this stock handle. The handle is attached to the scoop by a process of heating an adhesive product called rosin, placing the two parts together until the rosin cooled, this would then adhere the two items together.
There are four marks assayed to this piece, date letter, duty mark, makers mark and Lion passant mark. The silver scoop shows no town mark, London assay office sometimes didn't place their town mark on small items till the start of the 1800s.

The antique sterling silver stilton cheese scoop is in lovely condition. The articulation works perfectly with all elements secure and without play. Small surface marks on the cheese scoop end as the push blade travels down. The silver scoop is without tears, dents or repairs with surface marks representative of age. Marks are slightly rubbed to tops of but all legible, crest is slightly rubbed but clear.
